Gershwin Plays Gershwin. Various piano pieces, George Gershwin, piano. The fidelity of these recording derives from the Duo-Art piano recording mechanism which allowed for capture and playback of the actual performance with all its nuances. (I've listened to Rhapsody in Blue played back "live" on a Steinway Duo-Art and it is quite amazing.) Recorded circa 1925 and played back on a Steinway Duo-Art piano for this 1974 Everest recording. Everest 3371. Transfer by Bob Varney.

An analysis of perfect verb forms in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) looks at the distribution of forms by semantic function and co-occurrence patterns in Samana English and ex-slave recordings. Results suggest that despite the overall rarity of this category in the general realm of past time, the most frequent forms used to mark it ("have" + past participle and bare past participles) are not at all marginal in contexts "licensed" for the present perfect in...

The behavior of verbal "-s" is examined in two data sets on early Black English as represented by: (1) tape-recorded interviews with native English-speaking residents of a region of the Dominican Republic; and (2) the ex-slave recordings housed in the Library of Congress. Each verbal construction with the potential for variable "-s" marking was extracted. The phonological, morphological, syntactic, and discourse factors affecting occurrence were analyzed. Results suggest...

It seems highly likely that many of the features of Black American English can be traced back to the Afro-Portuguese Creole dialects that sprang up in the fifteenth century in Portuguese slave camps along the West African coast, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea area, the area of greatest concentration of activity during the slave trade. This Creole was used for communication by the Portuguese slave traders and the slaves on the one hand, and by the slaves themselves on the other hand, since...

This is the original recording of Gershwin's masterpiece, what may surprise many people is that it is an acoustic recording not electric one. This record was released soon after the piece was first performed and was soon replaced by a much more common electrically recorded record. 2 parts
